Frequently Asked Questions

On this page you'll find answers to some of the most common questions that our clients and job seekers ask. Whether that's information on the types of positions we offer, the application process, qualifications, or anything else related to our services.

Do I need any qualifications to work with Macon?

If you want to work on a construction site, you'll need a valid CSCS card (or your discipline's associated ticket).

Plant operators should always hold a valid, full UK driving licence.

On some occasions, CSCS may not be required. E.g. our client may tell us they'll consider candidates without CSCS when the project isn't on a construction site and they've evaluated that the work tasks and environment are low risk. We'll usually confirm 'NO CSCS REQUIRED' on our job ads.

If there are any other job-specific requirements we'll usually mention this in our job ad. We'll check your suitability for the role and ask to see evidence of your tickets/qualifications when we chat with you.

What is CSCS?

The Construction Skills Certificate Scheme was introduced in the 1990s due to the concerning numbers of serious accidents on UK building sites.

Passing the CSCS test indicates that you have (at least) the basic, industry standard competence and health, safety and environmental knowledge to work on a building site without endangering yourself or others.

This standard is applied to all trades, plant and site operatives in the UK construction industry.

There are different cards and levels specific to the various construction industry disciplines/trades, which prove the cardholder has the required training, skills and experience, for the type of work they’ll carry out.

How do I get a CSCS card?

We recommend that you do this directly through CITB, who are the Sector Skills Council for the construction industry.

https://www.citb.co.uk/

There are many other organisations who offer CSCS card application services too.

How much does it cost to get my CSCS?

Via CITB (last checked January 2023), CSCS cards cost £36 and the Health, Safety and Environment test costs £22.50.

If you’re being charged more than CITB’s standard fees, check that you understand the additional services you’ll receive.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be entitled to funding towards your CSCS card and your PPE.

What's PPE?

PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. As a minimum this includes your safety helmet/hard hat, gloves, eye protection, high visibility clothing and safety footwear.

Will I need tools as part of my job?

From time to time, general site operatives may be required to use tools and equipment, provided by our client onsite.

Qualified trades and most ‘skilled’ workers are expected to have their own tools. If you don’t have all of the tools you’ll need, tell us, we may be able to speak to the site and establish a solution.

Tools used onsite must be PUWER compliant.
